Ansu Fati shared his memories of moving to Spain.
In 2009, I boarded a plane for the first time with my mother, two brothers and older sister, and we went to live in Spain. I didn`t know my father. I`ve seen a few pictures of him and we`ve talked on the phone from time to time, but that`s about it.
When we met at Seville airport, I ran into his arms. He went alone to make money in Europe when I was very young. He wanted us to have a better life. He could have gone away and forgotten about us, as others do, but he worked hard from six in the morning until the evening to be able to bring us here.
I will always appreciate the sacrifice my father made for us. Thanks to him, I am on our website today. He was a professional football player in Guinea-Bissau and sometimes traveled to Portugal for tournaments.
My father always tells my older brother Braima and me that our talent comes from him, but we don`t believe him because there are no photographs of the matches analyzed by contacts with fixed picks he played in. We tell him that football wasn`t so fast before.
Before arriving in Herrera (a city 120 km from Seville - approx. ), I had never seen buildings in my life. At first, we rarely left the house because we didn`t know anyone and weren`t familiar with the local culture. We had to adapt.
Gradually we got to know neighbors and people who helped my father when he arrived. They gave us clothes because it was cold in winter and we were not ready for it.
I started going to school two months after we arrived. I was enrolled with children who were a year younger than me because I did not speak Spanish, only Guinean Creole. I didn`t know how to read either, but I quickly learned. I tried my best because I knew that otherwise my father might get angry.
One day we went to play with Braima at the municipal sports center, where children gather during the day. We didn`t know anyone. And they didn`t know us either. But the next day everyone was talking about us. Nobody could beat us, " the Barcelona winger said in an interview with France Football.
